Have you determined your budget? It is important to keep your budget low when shopping for your first guitar. You will want to stay within about $200-$300. Until you or the new musician gets comfortable with the routine and figures out if they really do like it, it is wise to be conservative on the first purchase, then graduate. Hopefully the new musician has at least spent some time around an advanced player, this way he or she will be more certain of their desire to learn. Then have the musician friend assist in picking out the instrument, if you are uncertain.
