A big part of what set The Beatles apart from other bands early 1960s was that they wrote their own songs. In fact, 8 of the 14 songs included on their debut 1963 album, Please Please Me were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. This song was written by McCartney but Lennon did help Paul out with some of the lyrics by replacing “never been a beauty queen” with “you know what I mean.” It’s “1, 2, 3, 4″ intro was referenced with the intro of “Taxman” (same words, with a very different feeling.)
“Misery” – The last original Beatles song recorded for Please Please Me, but it was the second one on Pleas Please Me’s tracklisting. It was written by Lennon/McCartney to be sang by pop star Helen Shapiro but it was turned down so they recorded it for their debut album.

This song is the one that really made John, Paul, George & Ringo big stars in Great Britain. Over a year later “I Want to Hold Your Hand” would do the same thing in in America.
“Love Me Do” – This song is undoubtedly historically important as The Beatles first single. That being said, I think that “Love Me Do” is among their worst originals and I think it gets more attention than it deserves.
“P.S. I Love You” – This was the b-side to “Love Me Do.” I think I actually prefer it, but that’s probably mostly because I haven’t heard it nearly as many times.
“Do You Want To Know A Secret?” – One of their most catchy songs even if it’s not among their best.
“There’s A Place” – I think this song stands out on the debut because of it’s introspective lyrics. It is an early hint that The Beatles would not always sing about how much they loved some young woman.
